Project “Prunus Mume”

The “Prunus Mume” collection, which we consider our identity collection, is based on the plum tree, a flower that has long been a favorite of the Japanese. The ume has long been a favorite flower of the Japanese people, but it can be seen as traditional at best and old-fashioned at worst. We call this project “Prunus Mume”.

Anecdotes about Ume

The "Flying Plum Legend" (Tobiume Densetsu) is a cherished Japanese folktale linked to the revered scholar and deity Sugawara no Michizane, who is also honored as Tenjin, the god of scholarship. According to the legend, when Michizane was exiled from Kyoto to Dazaifu in the 9th century, he left behind his beloved plum trees. Moved by sorrow and longing, it is said that one of these plum trees miraculously took flight overnight, carrying its blossoms from Kyoto all the way to Dazaifu. This miraculous event was seen as a divine sign of his enduring spirit and hope, symbolizing renewal even in the face of loss. Today, the legend is commemorated at the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, where the flying plum serves as a timeless emblem of resilience and the transformative power of new beginnings.

Modernizing the Ume

The “modernization of ume” advocated by Mr. & Mrs. Abe is not simply a reinterpretation of tradition or simply following trends. It is an attempt to create a future culture by adding new aspects to the multifaceted charm of ume by combining the traditional ume virtues of patience and regeneration with new perspectives - concepts, novel combinations, and techniques of expression that have not yet been adopted.

作品講評

本作品は、梅というモチーフに対して新しい視点から挑戦しており、その発想、構想、そして具現化する描写力が極めて高く、第二回の大賞にふさわしいものと評価しました。

作品全体を通じて、『梅』は単なる植物や、一般的な花言葉や象徴性からの着想で終わることなく、作者自身の深い思索を経て、独自の視点から再解釈されています。

作者は、梅を日本人の精神や文化にとって、まるで血液のように内面から流れる根源的な存在として捉え、そこに新たなコンセプトを見出しています。観る者に新たな発見を促すこのアプローチは、まさに本コンテストの目指す「梅のモダナイゼーション」という方向性と一致しています。

また、手首から突き抜けるように咲く梅の花の描写は、ともすればグロテスクな印象を抱かせるかもしれません。しかしその背後には確固たる生命力が息づいており、従来のイメージとは異なる大胆さが感じられます。

一見、リストカットを想起させる構図に映るものの、混乱や自己破壊的な印象は一切なく、むしろ芯の通った力強さが際立っている点も大変興味深い点と言えるでしょう。

全体として、この作品はシンプルな美しさだけでなく、深い意味や強い意志を感じさせる、大変素晴らしい作品と言え、今回の大賞に選出いたしました。

本作品は、木版リトグラフという技法を用いて、エコー写真のような繊細なイメージを生み出しています。そこに映し出されるのは、母となる前の、あるいは母になりつつある者の姿。曖昧でありながら確かな存在感をもつその造形は、生命の誕生という神秘的な瞬間を捉えながら、同時に「梅」というテーマとも深く響き合っているようです。

梅は、日本文化において不屈の生命力と再生、そして内面からあふれる情熱の象徴ともされます。さらに、木版リトグラフならではの版の重なりや滲みが、梅の花が春先に咲く際の繊細な印象や、生命力を彷彿とさせています。エコーのような表現が、生命の誕生という刹那的で確かな変化の瞬間をより一層引き立て、見る者に多層的な解釈を可能とします。

梅は古来より「再生」や「希望」の象徴とされてきました。本作が表現する母性の芽生えもまた、ひとつの再生であり、新たな命への希望の光である。その意味で、本作品は梅というテーマに対し、本質的でありながら独自の解釈を示した意欲作であるとも言えるでしょう。
